"Power, money, persuasion, supplication, persecution -- these can lift at a colossal humbug -- push it a little -- weaken it a little over the course of a century; but only laughter can blow it to rags and atoms at a blast. Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand." -Mark Twain
"The political and commercial morals of the United States are not merely food for laughter, they are an entire banquet."
- Mark Twain
- 2008 Locher Award -
The 2008 AAEC/John Locher Memorial Award for best student editorial cartoonist in the country was awarded to Sam this year for his work published in the Yale Daily News. (The four winning cartoons are below.)
The award was started in 1987 in honor of the late son of Mary and Dick Locher, who is a Pulitzer-prize winning editorial cartoonist. The Locher Award, given each year to an undergraduate cartoonist, is presented at the annual AAEC Convention. The judges this year said the "subject matter of Ayres' four winning cartoons was timely and varied. The subjects ranged from commentary on Senator John McCain's presidential campaign to "free" speech in Iran."
