"Power, money, persuasion, supplication, persecution -- these can lift at a colossal humbug -- push it a little -- weaken it a little over the course of a century; but only laughter can blow it to rags and atoms at a blast. Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand." -Mark Twain
"The political and commercial morals of the United States are not merely food for laughter, they are an entire banquet."
- Mark Twain
After the NRA made it clear they would withhold endorsing ''any presidential candidate'' until after the decade-long Assault Weapons ban was disposed of, President Bush made himself scarce on the topic. Even though anywhere from 67 to 80 percent of the nation supports the ban, it failed to pass the House and will not be renewed. The ban, instituted in 1994, outlawed 19 of the most dangerous killing machines made by gun manufacturers. Its success was evident: it led to a 66% decrease in assault-weapons related crimes. As if that weren't enough, an ATF report stated that Islamic Radicalist groups such as Al-Qaeda purchased assault weapons like the AK-47 on American soil when they were legal before the ban.
